A Huge Thank You To My Family!
2017 was an amazing year. I completed a B.H.A.G. (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). The goal was to become an Accredited Genealogist® … let me tell you what that means.
ICAPGenSM (The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists) is a credentialing organization that offers rigorous testing to genealogists interested in proving their expertise and demonstrating a very high research standard. Ever since I graduated from BYU (Brigham Young University) 15 years ago with a BA degree in Genealogy/Family History, I’ve wanted to be an AG®. I’m a full-time mom. I’m not employed by a genealogy firm, I don’t make time for clients, and my role as an online genealogy teacher does not require the credential. But I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I knew I would polish valuable genealogy skills in the process.
Six children after college graduation, somehow I decided that 2017 was the year to make my goal happen. Baby #6 was 3-years-old … not as needy as a newborn. So I jumped in. My region of expertise is England. I spent a phenomenal number of hours brushing up, learning new things, and studying for the four-stage testing process. The 1st level was passed early in the year (a large research report … it felt similar to preparing a Masters Thesis), I was allowed to take the 2nd level exam in May, the 3rd level in August, and the 4th (an oral board-of-review) in October. As you can image, I simply could not have taken or passed these exams without the support of my amazing family.
One day, in the middle of an intense study week, I noticed a sign had been hung on my door:
Another day (in fact, this happened quite a few days), my sweet daughter noticed my intense study and thought to deliver lunch at my computer.
I was especially grateful that my children seemed interested, and even inspired by my goal. They didn’t hold it against me or blame me for neglect (which I tried carefully to avoid). They recognized that Mom was doing something she really wanted to do. I hope they see through my example the value of continuing education and reaching for our goals, even the big ones! The following illustration came home from school on Mothers Day, last year. It’s quite accurate:
And to top it all off, my husband treated me to a trip to England in November once the testing was all complete. It was heaven.
What a wonderful family I have!
Goal for 2018: Be a great wife and mom. Keep learning. Keep researching.
